I’ll be upfront and tell you right away that the Rig gaming headphones 8000 pro HX version works perfectly fine on PlayStation. It sounds great, the mic works fine, and there are no weird volume issues. I can still adjust the volume, and everything works as expected. There’s a switch on the dongle to go from Xbox to PC mode.

I just wanted to make that clear in case some of you tune out or miss it later in the review. The Xbox version works on all three platforms without any issues. This headset was not sent to me for review; I purchased it myself. I do this to keep the channel unbiased and give every model a fair shot.

I mentioned the price and cross-platform compatibility. The Rig gaming headphones 800 Pro HX is a unique headset in this crowded price range. It’s unique because it has a dock, cross-platform support, and doesn’t use Bluetooth. Instead, it uses micro USB, which is a bit dated now.

The headset features good ear pads and a suspension head strap. There are things I like and dislike about it, and by the end of this review, you should be able to decide if it’s the right headset for you. Let’s start with some basic specs.

It’s rated for a 24-hour battery life and has a 30-foot range from the transmitter. It uses 40mm drivers. I’ve got a new test called the “toilet test” to measure range: can the headset go through a few walls and 25–30 feet away from the transmitter before it cuts out?

The build uses a lot of plastic, but it doesn’t squeak or fall apart. The suspension head strap is awesome and really comfortable. It helps evenly distribute weight, so there are no hot spots. The fabric used in the headband is breathable and prevents sweating.

However, if you have a lot of hair or wear a hat, the roughness of the fabric might become annoying. This isn’t a big deal for most people, but it’s something to keep in mind. What’s weird is how you adjust the height of the headset—it’s not like traditional adjusters.

Instead, the entire left ear cup pops off the headband. The cup is still held by a wire, but this might not hold up over time. This is an interesting design decision that helps keep costs down, but it seems solid enough for now.

When it comes to ear pads, they’re great. They’re not budget pads by any means. They use springy foam and sport fabric to touch your ear. The ear pads are soft enough and large enough that people with glasses will be comfortable too.

These pads are incredibly comfortable, and I think they’re one of the best at this price range. They’re more comfortable than the Corsair HS80 and Turtle Beach Stealth 600 and 700. Comfort-wise, the Rig gaming headphones 800 Pro HX is very similar to the Nova 7, depending on your head shape.

The dimensions of the ear cups are 60mm in height and 38mm in width. They’re a bit larger than the Astro 850, and they’re deep and tall, which means they’ll fit most people. These pads are excellent, and I don’t see many complaints about them.

Comfort and Ear Pads

The clamp force isn’t too tight either, so the pads do compress a bit inward. The clamp force is just enough to give a good seal without being uncomfortable. Now let’s talk about the build quality again—it’s a little cheaper-feeling, but it holds up well.

One thing I don’t like is the adjustment mechanism. It’s a unique way of doing things, but I don’t love it. The overall comfort is still fantastic, though. Now, let’s talk about the controls and layout.

This headset has a game-to-chat mix function if you’re using it on Xbox. On PlayStation, this doesn’t work, as Sony doesn’t allow it. The mix dial is very responsive and has minimal delay. You can fade from game to chat audio very easily, which is great for competitive gaming.

The headset has a master volume dial that adjusts the headset’s volume. On Windows, this will also adjust the system volume. This is a feature I love—it makes adjusting volume super convenient. The microphone button isn’t a mute button but a flip-to-mute feature.

I love flip-to-mute because it’s fast, and you don’t have to fumble around. This button also changes the microphone’s side tone, with several levels from off to boosted. I personally don’t like side tone at high levels because it introduces some distortion.

The headset has a micro USB charging port. It’s a slow charger, so don’t expect rapid charging. You can charge it while you’re playing, but it’ll take a while. There’s no charge bypass, so you can’t charge and play at the same time unless you use a different cable.

The base station is cool because it lets you dock the headset when not in use. The transmitter is detachable and can be plugged directly into the console. This is great for keeping your setup neat while still having solid wireless performance.

The Dolby Atmos license is included with the headset, which is awesome for Xbox and PC users. On PlayStation, however, you can’t EQ the sound, so you’re limited in tuning options. Still, the sound is fun and dynamic for gaming.

Frequency Response and EQ

When it comes to music, the frequency response is a bit inconsistent. It doesn’t sound as natural as high-end headphones. But for gaming, it sounds much better than some of the more expensive headsets out there. The Rig 800 Pro HX strikes a great balance for fun, immersive gaming sound.

In terms of competitive gaming, this headset is great. You don’t feel like you have to make any compromises to perform. I think it’s one of the best under $200 for gaming. It outperforms the Astro A50, in my opinion, at half the price.

I also tested the frequency response and compared it to the Harman curve. The bass is a bit heavy, and the midrange is recessed. The headset has a typical “V-shape” response common for gaming headsets, which gives a fun sound.

After using Dolby Atmos, I could tweak the sound a bit. It helped improve the midrange, which made the sound more natural to me. But, overall, the headset does a great job, especially considering the price point.

The battery life is shorter than some of its competitors. Although it works well for most gaming sessions, it won’t last as long as high-end models. Additionally, the charging speed is slower due to the use of a micro USB port instead of more modern charging methods.

3. Charging Bug

There is a recurring issue where, if the headset is plugged into a device while turned off, it can cause a loud microphone blast, which may disrupt other users. This can be fixed by either turning the headset on or unplugging and re-plugging the transmitter, but it’s an annoying bug to deal with.

4. Lack of Advanced Features

While it performs well for gaming, the Rig 800 Pro HX lacks some advanced features like customizable EQ settings, Bluetooth support, or in-depth customization options. This makes it a more basic, plug-and-play headset compared to premium models.

Final Thoughts

While the Nova may be priced lower, it has a few downsides, including less battery life, slower charging due to its micro USB port, and a weaker microphone compared to the Rig 800 Pro HX. However, if you’re not too concerned with things like EQ, Bluetooth, or fine-tuning, and simply want a headset that performs well out of the box, the Rig 800 is a solid choice.

One annoying bug I encountered: if I plugged the headset into a device while it was off and not docked, it blasted a full-volume microphone signal, causing some issues in Party Chat. Unplugging the transmitter and re-plugging it in or turning the headset on solved the problem, but it’s something to watch out for.

Despite that, the headset’s dock is solid with a satisfying magnetic click, and overall, it’s a reliable and fun option for gamers who prioritize comfort and sound quality. Personally, I would choose this headset over the Astro A50. It’s more comfortable, sounds better, and costs half the price. My Astro has already started falling apart, while the Rig gaming headphones rig 800 Pro HX has been consistent and durable.

In conclusion, while there may be other headsets that are more customizable or packed with additional features, the Rig gaming headphones Rig 800 Pro HX stands out for its simplicity and great performance. If you want a no-fuss gaming headset that delivers in sound and comfort, this one is definitely worth considering.
